What is a Single-Ventricle Heart?
Normally, the heart has two pumping chambers (ventricles). Some babies are born with only one working ventricle - a condition affecting roughly 5 in 100,000 newborns.
To survive, these children undergo a series of surgeries culminating in the Fontan procedure, which reroutes blood flow but leaves them without a pump to push blood through their lungs.
